Crossdressing: Not a Game But an Exploration of the
Senses and PsycheCrossdressing

While, by definition, crossdressing obviously requires the wearing of women's lingerie and clothing by the dresser, "true" crossdressing is not merely an instance of slipping on a pair of panties, a bra, and a tight little skirt. Crossdressing is a much more in-depth premise, which often consumes the crossdresser from head-to-toe, inside-and-out. While there are specific and basic attitudes and behaviors that are inherent across the spectrum of crossdressing, the precise desires, longings, and undertakings of each crossdresser are uniquely individual to him. In this illuminiation of such a highly misunderstood endeavor, I would like to celebrate and highlight some of the commonly occurring manners in which the crossdresser experiences his affinity for femininity.

Before proceeding, I would like to point out a very important fact about all of my crossdressers: They generally acknowledge, admire, and appreciate all things feminine to a profound extent to which most men simply do not, and their respect for women is outstanding. They often tell me that, for as much as they enjoy getting dolled up from head to toe in girly gear, they are envious of the more than just the clothing and look of being a woman; they admit to coveting some or all of the behaviors typically associated with being very womanly (i.e., shopping; having spa days where they get manicures, pedicures, and facials; being admired for their beauty and sensuality; prissing in their walk; soft and feminine in their talk, etc.). Granted there are as many variations in the components of womanly looks and actions that they desire to manifest as there are differences among women themselves.

Upon becoming familiar with the wide range of crossdressers and their various preferences, it is not difficult to see that the appeal in crossdressing is a whirlwind of both sensory and psychological experiences, and all of these experiences revolve around an intense appreciation for aspects of Womanhood that most people –men and women alike- do not grasp or understand. In terms of sensory stimulation, crossdressing and being feminized encompasses complete indulgence by the senses.

There is the tactile experience, which encompasses everything from the actual feel of various fabrics to the general touch as well as the brush of softness lingerie provides against their skin to the sensation of nylon stockings or pantyhose hugging their legs. Holding a pair of satin panties and brushing one’s fingers against the smoothness initiates excitement because that softness is associated with femininity, not to mention that the panties themselves are symbolic of being a woman due to the area of a woman’s body that is covered by them. Of all of the items of clothing that a woman might wear, what item could possibly be considered the most feminine?

Then there is the visual experience of Womanhood. That crisp, put-together, professional, classy look –every hair in place, flawless make-up, wrinkle-free attire, perfectly straight stocking seams running down the back of the legs, high heels- is appreciated across crossdressers. In addition, it is not just looking feminine in appearance that is important, but walking, properly crossing the legs, and generally carrying one’s self in a ladylike manner are just as crucial. The walk and mannerisms must be perfected too. After all, any woman who takes pride in her appearance should take the time to achieve perfection in every aspect of it – and my crossdressers certainly understand and reinforce that concept!

Let’s not forget the olfactory experience of being a woman; the smells associated with a woman who takes pride in completely presenting as feminine are pretty, sweet, and often intoxicating. Whether it is sliding into a tub of bubbles, lathering one’s body with fragrant lotion or spritzing the pulse points with an exotic perfume, the smells associated with being a woman are those which delight the senses of all who are exposed to them. The feminine essences are equally delightful for both the wearer and those whose noses catch the sweet scent of girlishness in the air several seconds after Ms. Femininity has passed by them.

With regard to the aural experience of being girly, a large number of my crossdressers strive to work on making their voices as devoid of masculinity as much as is possible in order that they might sound at least a bit like a woman, even if that woman is Kathleen Turner. They long to have their voices sound not only feminine when they speak, but also when they laugh.

As far as the psychology of thinking and behaving like a woman, I firmly believe that a large number of my crossdressers have explored and understand the finer points of “being” a woman more than do most women, who simply take for granted these things. They derive such enjoyment from shopping for and carefully choosing lingerie, coordinating outfits, selecting the “right” accessories, styling their hair, and having their nails painted. Every aspect of being feminine is a joy they cherish in the fullest experience of every moment. They join in girl talk with girlfriends, whisper about men they pass in the mall, compare beauty tips, and talk about the newest styles. If a certain behavior is seen as that of a stereotypically very femme woman, then that is a behavior worthy of emulation and perfection. My crossdressers put such effort in their endeavors to be womanlike that it amazes even a girly girl such as myself.

I am sure that, upon reading this description, my crossdressers would readily confer and agree that they experience their own explorations and expressions of femininity in different ways and at different levels. However, it is my assessment after interaction with a large number of crossdressers –from young to old, married to divorced, wealthy to modest- that most will agree that crossdressing affects and enriches their lives on far more than simply one level. In the aspirations of my beloved crossdressers, beauty and femininity are certainly much more than skin deep.
